The Summer of Love
Love is in the air at Heaton Park and kicking off this year's summer season is the open-air production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet by the prestigious Globe Touring company.
There will be eight performances over six days, every evening from Tuesday 17 until Sunday 22 at 7.30pm, with matinee performances at 2.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday. Audiences will be able to soak up the dramatic landscape of Heaton Park, with the stage set against the beautifully restored Dower House.
This modern interpretation of Shakespeare's classic love story is set to start pulses racing as 1,000s of theatre goers head to North Manchester to experience this production; this is the first time Shakespeare's Globe has performed in Manchester.
Romeo is being played by 25-year old Alan Morrisey, who lives in London, but was born in Stockport and grew up in both Levenshulme and Didsbury. This will be his first performance in Greater Manchester since his 5* (Manchester Evening News) turn as James, in James and the Giant Peach in Bolton, which was voted Best Family Show by the MEN.
Alan Morrisey said: ' I am really excited about coming home to perform a part that I love in a play that I love.'
It is not just Alan who is excited, expectant audiences are too and it seems it won't just be Juliet's heart that is sent fluttering after they witness Alan's acting prowess. Alan's family and friends from across Manchester will be coming to see him perform.
Michelle, who works for Manchester City Council at Heaton Park, and lives in Blackley said: "My partner and I came on our first to date to Heaton Park 12 years ago, and we're just about to have our first baby. We're hoping to attend a show and have one more romantic evening at Heaton Park before the baby arrives.
Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Arts & Leisure at Manchester City Council said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to see this classic love story performed by one of the most innovative Shakespearean theatre companies in the UK. Coupled with the marvellous setting at Heaton Park, this is truly a performance not to be missed."
