Heaton Park has a Safe Pair of Hands

Heaton Park is proud to welcome a new, small addition to their farm in the shape of newborn calf, Seymour.

The pedigree calf has been named after a family name of the Earl of Wilton, who owned the park until 1902.

Seymour made his first appearance on Wednesday 6 February after a difficult breech birth, which left first-time mum, Heather, a beef shorthorn pedigree heifer, more than a little bewildered.

Fortunately Nicola Atkinson, a member of the park's security team was on hand to ably assist Stables' Supervisor, Steve Foley and was there to witness the successful birth of a healthy bull.

Nicola said: "I always expect the unexpected because of my job as a security officer. I can never predict what is going to happen on any given day but this must be one of the more unusual incidents I have dealt with.

It was quite messy and a bit tricky at times but it was very exhilarating and I am very proud when I see both mother and calf together."

Councillor Mike Kane, Executive Member for Arts and Leisure, Manchester City Council said: "There have been a few additions to Heaton Park's animal centre lately including two new kune kune pigs. I'm never surprised at the dedication shown by staff working at Heaton Park and I am sure Seymour will be a very popular attraction over the next few weeks."

After the birth, the vet who attended gave mother and son a clean bill of health and commended staff on a successful delivery.
