Fair Verona in Heaton Park

Heaton Park is to provide the backdrop for a stunning outdoor performance of Romeo & Juliet this summer, brought to Manchester by the prestigious Globe Theatre.

This will be the first time that Globe Touring has brought its unique style of open-air performance to the city, and people are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

The tragic tale of star-crossed lovers will be played against the setting of Heaton Park's rolling landscape in front of Dower House in beautiful yet informal surroundings.

Audiences are advised to bring a rug to sit on as no seating is provided in order to enhance the rustic and natural atmosphere of the performance. The field will be open for picnics one hour before the play begins.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's Assistant Executive Member for Arts and Leisure said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to see this classic love story performed by one of the most innovative Shakespearean theatre companies in the UK. Coupled with the marvellous setting at Heaton Park, this is truly a performance not to be missed."

Directed by Elizabeth Freestone, whose credits include working with the National Theatre, this stripped-down open-air production of Shakespeare's most famous tragedy has all the ingredients to entertain a modern audience; violence, passion, comedy and romance, all of which transport Shakespeare's Verona cleverly and vibrantly to Manchester's Heaton Park.

Romeo & Juliet presented by Globe Touring at Heaton Park runs Tuesday 17 - Sunday 22 June at 7.30pm. Matinee performances will take place Wednesday 18 and Saturday 21 at 2.30pm. Audiences may want to bring an umbrella as the production will go ahead rain or shine.
