Junior golf hits the tee at Heaton Park

The First Tee® initiative at Heaton Park Golf Centre is already benefiting thousands of young people in and around the North Manchester area.

The First Tee of Manchester's Life Skills Experience® was delivered at Heaton Park in 2009 to more than 3,000 young people, providing education and learning opportunities through the game of golf. The First Tee programme is coordinated by UK registered charity, Empowering Youth Foundation.

Last year, The First Tee of Manchester participants from Heaton Park golf centre enjoyed a special coaching sessions with the legendary golf champion Jack Nicklaus and PGA Professional and world ladies number five, Paula Creamer.

Plans for 2010 are already well underway with a primary schools golf festival planned for June, which will see over 500 children take to the course for fun and games at the park's Junior Golf Academy. A full range of The First Tee's Life Skills Experience will be available to youth aged 5 to 18 through after school programmes and during all school holidays.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure said: "The golf centre is a tremendous asset to the park as the leading public golf course in the city. I'm particularly pleased that the First Tee of Manchester programme is being offered to junior members, creating valuable opportunities for recreation and learning. It's proving to be extremely popular among young people and is a major part of our commitment to improving access to sport across the city and promoting healthy lifestyles."

The First Tee of Manchester will also deliver training schemes for more PGA professionals and adult volunteers to become qualified in delivering the Life Skills Experience. This will allow even more youth in Manchester to benefit from the programme.

An Open Day will take place at the Golf Centre on Tuesday, 16th February, 2010 where free use of both the Championship course and the Par-3 pitch & putt course will be available throughout the day. This offers members of the public the opportunity to try Heaton Park's fantastic golf facilities at no cost.

The Heaton Park Golf Centre is managed in partnership with Mack Golf and Manchester City Council.
