Staffed entirely by volunteers, Heaton Park Tramway operates from the Tram Shelter on selected Sundays and most Bank Holidays giving rides through the park on restored trams. School parties and private hire can be arranged on other days.
The museum and tramway opened in 1980 with restored Manchester single-deck tram number 765. Until then it was being used as a summerhouse following its withdrawal from service in the 1930's. The other working tram is Hull number 96, built in 1901 with a double-deck open top, although now it operates as a single saloon.
At present the restored reversible horse-tram L53 is on display at Castlecroft transport museum in Bury. It was built by John Eades in Manchester in 1880. We are currently operating Blackpool rail coach number 623, we have other vehicles in store out of service.
Heaton Park Tramway is run by the Museum Society on behalf of the Manchester Tramway Company, a joint venture with Manchester City Council.
